The incorporation of nanoadditives in surface coatings can provide long-term scratch resistance without significantly affecting other coating properties such as gloss, color, transparency.

Amounts required to achieve optimum performance depend on the chemical composition and the particle size of the nanoparticles.
Harder particles, such as alumina-based materials, can be used at lower dosages than softer particles, e.g., silica.

However, special surface treatment of the nanoparticles can enhance their efficiency strongly, so that also silica-based nanoparticles can be used at lower dosages.
