University UK

We also characterise the optical properties and the  physical structure of thin films as these are very often different from the corresponding bulk values. Much of our research is application-driven and also involves the development of tools for thin film deposition.
Some specific projects:-

1) Development of ultra-barrier layers for OLED displays on flexible substrates
2) Metallisation processes for active matrix backplanes
3) Broadband optical monitoring
4) Thin film batteries

2)Commercial prospects

All of the above have good commercial prospects. The first two in flexible displays, the third in manufacture of precision optical filters and the fourth in self-powered RFID tags etc.

3)Infrastructure

The Centre has first-class facilities for the deposition of single and multilayer thin films including sputtering, electron-beam deposition and chemical vapour deposition. There are also excellent tools for characterisation of film properties.

4)Requirements

The critical factor for us is the availability of staff , there is no shortage of project ideas.
