We are pioneering the use of nanoparticles and nanoparticle arrays of vanadium dioxide and other oxides that undergo metal-insulator or other interesting phase transitions that can be triggered optically, thermally or electrically.  We have explored (and patented) their potential use in such applications as optical limiting, percolation networks, and sub-wavelength optics.
