The institute has experience in the field of modification and characterization of polymeric, metallic and ceramic material surfaces on a nanoscopic scale including the development of antimicrobial and antiadhesive surface coatings, development of tailor-made surfaces for biological and biotechnological purposes and films with well defined properties. The equipment of the institute including a great variety of analytical techniques as well as plasma treatment chambers is available for the planned developments.
The microbiological department is involved in interdisciplinary cooperation. Techniques to select, to characterize and to grow bacteria, fungi as well as algae are well established.
Microbiological test methods to measure antimicrobial effects are developed since many years. Test systems for photocatalytic surfaces are used, too. Every time new aspects and applications became of interest, therefore test methods are new developed or adapted and can be used or modified in the proposed project.
Technical equipment: chemical laboratories and different plasma chambers for development and application of surface coatings; surface analytical methods; microbiological laboratories: equipment for cultivation of bacteria, fungi, algae, as well as quantification of cell concentration and biological activity. Bioreactors to cultivate biofilms are in use. Testsystems to characterize antimicrobial activity. Radiation chamber with temperature control. Analytical methods for chemical quantification of organic molecules.
Stage of commercialization: we are specialists for research and development of surface modifications and analysis of surfaces, including microbiological test methods. We are not active in product commercialization
