The Laboratory deals with fibre development using a bicomponent fibre spinning device and finishing techniques using both wet-chemical and plasma-assisted methods as well as combinations thereof. The lab have expert knowledge in the deposition of polymer-like (organic), ceramic, and metallic coatings via PECVD and PVD (sputtering) techniques. Beside batch reactors, a continuous fibre coater and a web coater are available to demonstrate the applicability on a pilot plant size. Other areas include: Thermal insulating coatings: ceramic coatings (oxides and nitrides such as AlN, SiO2, ZrO2, etc.); Stain repellents: sub-micron wet chemical treatment which yield up to grade 8 according to oil repellency test AATCC 118; Ultrathin, long-term stable hydrophilic coatings; Anti-bacterial functionality on fibers and textile fabric: Metallic Ag or Ag Oxide coatings; Anti-bacterial silver coatings can also be produced in the form of nano-composites consisting of Ag clusters in a matrix, which can be tailored to meet specific requirements; Surface modification with protective anti-fouling coatings: PEO-like coatings can be produced by PE-CVD methods, or covalent grafting of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and heparin following plasma activation using reactive gases such as O2 and Ar. |
