The incorporation of a whole range of nano-particles (nano-ceramics, organically modified clays, carbon nanotubes, etc.) incorporated into a polymeric matrix yields a new class of materials called nanocomposites. Research in this area has boosted in several application fields since the last five years. Most successful up to now were applications in automotive, engineering and film applications. The properties envisaged here look also promising for the textile industry: (halogen free!) flame-retardancy, better mechanical properties, improved UV- and thermo-stability, barrier properties, creep reduction, brighter colours, etc. The company is conducting an intensive study on the feasibility of nanocomposites based on low contents (<5%) organic modified clay minerals, carbon nanotubes and nano-sized metal oxides for the melt-extrusion of a whole range of new high-performance textile applications (BCF, CF, staple, monofil, tapes).
