For decades zinc rich primers have been used for anti-corrosion protection in heavy duty environments. These primers are based on zinc metal powders with average particle sizes ranging from 2,5 to15 micron.

The company have developed a paint formulation based on nano zinc metal powders (average particle size 100 nm). A comparison was made between the mechanical, chemical and anti-corrosion properties of nano zinc primers and the commercial zinc rich primers.

Both primers have been evaluated with and without a polyurethane topcoat. While commercial zinc rich coatings provide an excellent corrosion protection at 67% PVC due to the cathodic protection mechanism, nano zinc powder coatings provide a comparable protection at the very low PVC's of 1-5%. Corrosion potential measurements show that another mechanism accounts for the good corrosion protection of nano zinc coatings.
