A project under development at the Department of Materials ivolves “Degradation Behaviour of Nanocrystalline Metals”. Nanocrystalline metals offer dramatic improvements in mechanical properties over their bulk counterparts. The improvements due to the grain size reduction are well known but little attention has been paid to the long-term stability of these materials and the role that a large volume fraction of grain boundaries may play in degradation processes. This project will assess the electrochemical and thermal oxidation behaviour of nanocrystalline Ni and Co; and couple this to changes in mechanical properties and susceptibility to cracking. |
