• Scratch resistant coatings;
• Gas sensors (electronic noses).
A major component of the Department's work in the areas of materials modelling, processing, characterization and service performance is focused on materials for the transport sector, principally automotive and aerospace. It is concerned both with materials for vehicle structure, primarily aluminium and titanium based (including composites and titanium intermetallics), and materials for engine applications, predominantly aluminium for the automotive sector and nickel based superalloys for the aerospace sector.

A central unifying theme is the characterization of microstructure, either in support of work aimed at modelling microstructure development through processing or that concerned with the relationship between microstructure and properties.
