In my department we are doing a reseach on two-phase systems with polymeric matrices, i.e. polymer blends and composites.

Considering composites, the tailoring of interactions on the phase boundaries is the main target. The research is aimed to various ways of interaction increase, including a formation of covalent bonds on the interface; a significant part of the experiments is devoted to evaluation and controling of adhesion between the phases. By such a way we were able to achieve either very good properties of many materials or high filler contents at reasonable properties.

In the area of nanocomposites we are investigating various aspects of application of bentonite of local provenience with four main topics

polyolefinic matrix
biodegradable matrix (polycaprolactone, polyhydroxybutyrate)
rubber matrix
increase of electroconductivity of the nanofiller via deposition of electroconductive polymer (polypyrrole, polyaniline)
All these material are investigated in detail using other nanofillers for comparison with the bentonite. A close cooperation with the local bentonite producer can be extended to other partners willing to investigate or apply the product.

Nanocomposites based on biodegradable thermoplastic matrix are investigated in broader range also outside of the abovementioned project. The idea is to achieve a significant modification of the properties of biodegradable polymers by addition of small amounts of reinforcing filler (up to 5 %) to meet the requirement of ISO 14855 for definition of biodegadable materials (maximum content of nonbiodegradable component below 5 wt %).

Another project is aimed to nanofillers in rubber. POssible outcomes can contribute to a design of intelligent tire.

Some work has started also on compositions of nanoparticles with thermoplastic starch. This work is in starting phase; a project would be highly appreciated.

We have broad international cooperation and a vast experience in coopertion with industry, including large European companies. I have been involved in many international projects including contract research for companies, such as DSM, General Eletric Plastics (NL), National Power, Regenesys (UK), Biomer (Germany); most of this cooperation resulted in European patents.
