Applications of DLC and Me-DLC

1. Automotive components

- Camshafts, crankshafts, pistons, piston rings, tappets / shims, gears, bearings, valves, plungers (diesel injection)

- Increasing wear resistance

- Decreasing friction

Targets
- Reduce energy consumption
---improved fuel efficiency
-reduction of the CO2-emission
---Power amplification (Car Racing)
- better acceleration

2. Forming tools for aluminum and stainless steel deep drawing
 - Increasing the lifetime
- Prevent scuffing, fretting
- Extreme reduction of lubricants or
dry machining are possible

3. Smart Coatings: Sensor integrated multifunctional coatings

Intelligent washer:
DLC based nano-composite sensor for force control

Applications:
Automotive, traffic, tools, machines, robotic, security

Concept:
integrated thin film sensors multifunctional nano composite coatings

Summary and outlook
Multifunctional DLC based coatings - a-C:H, a-C:H:Me and a-C:H:X - can be prepared by reactive DC magnetron sputtering and by PACVD ⇒ broad application potential

Future work:
Higher deposition rates, faster processes (lower costs), integration in production lines

cBN:
Thick cBN based coatings (> 2 µm) were deposited by by reactive sputter deposition using boron carbide targets – high potential for cutting operations
Future work:
- Deposition on 3D substrates (edges of tools)
- Transfer of the cBN deposition to industrial coating machines (rotating, moving substrates)
