University UK

They are currently working in the field of nanoparticulate and nanocomposite optical materials (e.g. luminescent lanthanoid complexes or semiconducting nanoparticles embedded in polymers or sol-gel-systems), modification of polymers by carbon nanofibres (e.g. in order to adjust electrical conductivity), development of wet chemical (e.g. sol-gel-based) barrier coatings on polymers and glasses (e.g. for fire-retardant elements).

On this background, they are able to address the following subjects from the topical list (as well for plastic as for paper packaging):

Enhancement of durability and usability of plastic packaging: could offer research and experience with carbon nanofibre composites, inorganically coated polymer foils, modification with luminescent complexes or particles

Development of plastic flexible electronic displays: could offer research and experience with AC-electroluminescent layers, phosphors in general and colloid chemistry of phosphors and luminescent materials;

Flame-retardant polymers: could offer research and experience with flame-retardant layers on the background of a huge EU-funded project about flame-retardant glasses on the basis of sol-gel-derived layers;

Nanobarcodes: could offer research in luminescent sol-gel layers, also microstructured ones and development of novel luminescent complexes as taggants. These materials are also often strongly dependent on environmental conditions and thus can be developed as sensors or shelf time-indicators e.g. temperature-dependent decomposition processes could be used to display the freshness (or heat budget) of a product by a colour change or a luminescent signal change.
