A multilayer foil which enables reaction initiation (for propellant ignition, flares and fuses) and joining of dissimilar materials, making such applications predictable, controllable and far more affordable. When activated by a small pulse of local energy from electrical, optical or thermal sources, the foil precisely delivers localized heat up to temperatures of 2000°C in fractions (thousandths) of a second.

The foil is fabricated by vapor depositing thousands of alternating nanoscale layers of Aluminum (Al) and Nickel (Ni). When initiated by an electrical, thermal, mechanical or optical source they will mix and react to release heat energy in a predictable and controllable manner. Varying the composition of the foils and the thickness of the individual layers can control the velocities, temperatures and total energies of these reactions.

application areas:

Energetics:
Improved reliability
Rapid rise time
Greater safety

Joining:
Bonding dissimilar materials
Bonding metals to ceramics
Lower residual stress
Greater thermal conductivity
