Reduction of nitric oxide on a platinum catalytic grain studied by Video-Field Ion Microscopy: the reaction producing water and nitrogen is not continuous but initiated suddenly on certain areas containing only some tens of atoms (white spots). The periodic on-off switching constitutes an oscillatory behaviour. The research helps developing more active catalysts for automotive pollution control.
