Plasma Technology

Plasma treatments at intermediate and atmospheric pressure represent a promising technology with enormous potential for surface engineering. The main advantage of this method is that environmental friendly (solvent free) processing is combined with the ability to work in-line and at relatively low cost. Furthermore the technology represents cost effective and scalable techniques and the low operation temperature enables the treatment of virtually any kind of substrate material.

Surface modifications possible with these technique range from functionalization of surfaces in order to allow immobilization of molecules, to tailoring of the surface wettability properties, modifying chemical bonding capabilities and incorporating reactive elements.

Nanoscale aerosol particles can be injected in the gaseous precursor mixture, and therefore the choice for including elements at the surface is almost infinite.

These techniques are being introduced in a number of industrial processes for tailoring of the surface wetability properties, improving adhesion, cleaning or sterilization.  Novel aerosol assisted atmospheric plasma deposition methods makes it possible to deposit a broad range of nanostructured coatings with very high application potential due to its interesting economic characteristics (no vacuum, in line process, up-scalability).
