The company has extensive experience of managing biofilms in water supplies. Practical studies have been carried out for UK Water Companies to develop and calibrate models to predict biofilm formation and to evaluate disinfectant control strategies. The company has developed devices for non-invasive monitoring of biofilm formation in water mains. They have experience of using traditional and novel techniques for determining the amounts of biofilms and have made extensive use of ATP as an indicator of microbial biomass. Protocols have been devised and tests carried out to assess the ability of novel coatings to prevent microbial fouling. Studies were undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of copper and silver to control biofouling on sensors used in the water industry. In collaboration with its subsidiary company, the company is conducting an evaluation of a newly developed material designed to prevent biofouling on surfaces used in contact with water in machines for dispensing drinks. The company has also performed studies for the American Water Works Research Foundation to evaluate and control biofilms caused by fungi in water supplies. A series of practical tests were performed to compare the efficacy of different techniques for cleaning water mains under realistic conditions. |
