Development of novel materials called ferroics (ferroelectric and ferromagnetic in the same unit, and spintronic materials, which will make materials much smarter at low cost and low energy consumption.  

The materials discussed above are new, and the challenges and barriers will depend on the application in pursuit.  One has to tailor the properties of materials for this purpose with an end product in mind.

Applications are in environment and health issues. May be eventually to energy resources as well.
