Nanoscale semiconductor photochemistry, which can be used to create invisible films of titania for air and water purification and light-induced self-cleaning, self-sterilizing surfaces - usually referred to as semiconductor photocatalysis. This is a very active area of research and Strathclyde are one of the leading exponents.

Through nanoscale semiconductor photocatalysis it is possible to create coatings, for ceramics, glass, lamps etc that are capable of removing: unwanted smells, deposits, such as fats and oils (i.e. staying clean), bacteria (i.e. anti-microbial action) etc.
